OFF-GRID BASICS

This eco-cabin is completely OFF-GRID. (Don’t let this scare you). Our cabin is modernized and solar powered with electricity and heat. Feel good knowing that you’re choosing a low-carbon, eco-friendly getaway. As an off-grid cabin, energy conservation is key. Drawing too much energy may cause you to lose power, so you’ll need to be mindful of your consumption during your stay. There is a back-up generator when solar power is low.

LEAVE NO TRACE

All garbage and recycling must be packed up and taken home on your departure.

THINGS TO DO

BE AWARE

  • Ember cabin is located directly on the Tay-Havelock trail (part of the Trans Canada trail network and the longest recreational trail in the world). This trail is a public mixed-use trail used by hikers, cyclists and ATV’s. Depending on the day, you may hear others using the trail in the distance. Our cabin is located on private property out of sight and at a comfortable distance from the trail itself.
  • Ember cabin is not accessible by car. Guests must park their car at the trailhead and walk (about 5-minutes), cycle, ATV or snowmobile to our cabin. If cycling, we recommend bringing mountain or gravel bikes for this type of terrain.
  • There are dogs that live on a neighbouring property that borders the trail. They may bark at your approach but they stay to their own property and do not approach the trail. If you are bringing along your own pup(s), you should keep them leashed when hiking in to the cabin.

FAQs

What makes this location awesome?

This Cabinscape is located in Maberly, Ontario, in Tay Valley Township, an area known for pristine swimming, mature forests and steep rock faces. From the cabin you are just 8-minutes away from Silver Lake Provincial Park where you’ll find a public beach; and literally right on the Tay- Havelock trail (connected to the Trans-Canada Trail) for hours of hiking and cycling adventures. Looking for a day trip in town? From the cabin you are just 13-minutes from the village of Sharbot Lake and 18-minutes from the historic (and adorably quaint town) of Perth. Here is where you’ll find anything you might need: groceries, LCBO, Beer Store, great cafes, theatre, restaurants and great shopping.

Can I swim in the river?

The shoreline from our cabin is shallow (2-3 feet deep) with a flat, rocky bottom making it a refreshing wading area but not ideal for deep swimming. For good swimming options, consider visiting one of the nearby public beaches at Silver Lake Provincial Park or Sharbot Lake or paddling to deeper water.

When is check-in and check-out?

Entry is by lock-box and key. Check in time is 4 pm. Check-out is 12 pm.

What if I need assistance during my stay?

We are always just a text away for any questions or assistance. Our on-call property manager lives nearby and can be available on-site when needed.

What should I bring?

  • Your own food & drink
  • Your own towels, sheets, pillows, pillow cases and blankets
  • Firewood
  • Bug repellent
  • Hand sanitizer

When is running water shut off?

Our water is pumped from the river. Running water is shut off when temperatures dip below freezing. This normally happens mid-October but can vary each year.  When running water is shut off, we provide 40L of water for dish washing and drinking. All taps (including shower taps) are turned off. Water is turned back on before the May Long Weekend.

Please note that running water will be shut off on October 15th.

Can I bring additional guests?

This cabin can accommodate up to 3 guests plus 2 pups. The base rental rate includes 2 guests. A third guest is an additional $25 per night. Please check off 3 guests at checkout. If you’re bringing a pup, please select the “Pet Pal” option at checkout. Each pup is an additional $25 per night.

Is there WIFI/Cell Service?

There is NO WIFI access at this cabin. There is reliable cell reception. However, access to data is slow and spotty. Don’t plan on having a Zoom meeting here.

What electronics can I use at the cabin?

There is one outlet in the kitchen for charging your phone and laptop but charging multiple phones / laptops will drain the cabin’s battery quickly. We DO NOT recommend using the outlet for high voltage items like hairdryers, coffee makers, kitchen appliances, etc. This is a low voltage outlet and power outages will result. Health-related items like CPAP machines cannot be accommodated at our cabins. Feel free to reach out to bookings@cabinscape.com for clarification on what machines/electronics can be used at our cabins.

Are there bugs or critters?!

You bet. Depending on the season, you’ll encounter bugs of all sorts. Bugs, rodents and wildlife are a reality of the wilderness. Guests should come prepared with bug spray and proper protective attire. Ticks have also been a major issue across Ontario. Please do your research ahead of time and learn how to properly check yourself for ticks.

While we do our best to protect our cabins from pesky critters by having them seasonally sprayed, critters can sometimes find their way into the cabin. That’s why it’s important to keep your food sealed and stored. If you’re squeamish around bugs or critters, you may want to consider another kind of getaway.

Is this cabin pet friendly?

Yes! You are more than welcome to bring your furry friend for an extra fee of $25/per night. Select the “Pet Pal” option at checkout. At this cabin up to two dogs per booking are permitted. (We do not make exceptions to this rule).

Is the canoe available to use year round?

No. In an effort to ensure safe paddling practices at our cabins, we only offer our canoes when the water is at safe temperature (especially important in the event of an unexpected capsizing). When it is safe to paddle, typically between mid-April and early-November, this cabin comes with a complimentary rental canoe, two paddles, two adult PFDs and a bailing kit for our guests to enjoy during their stay.

If you are coming during the shoulder season, and would like to confirm whether the canoe will be available for your stay, please reach out to bookings@cabinscape.com with your reservation dates.
